The Paper Airplane told a
story about two teenage girls – who both are lesbian and fall in love with the
other. The girl who appears like a boy name Han (17 years old), the other name
Uyen (16 years old).
Han and Uyen go to the same
school, where Khoa – Uyen’s older brother also studies. At the beginning of the
film, Uyen and Khoa are going out of the school gate. They’re chatting. Uyen
see Han – is waiting for her nearby, and throw a green paper airplane to Han
then run to her with a happy smile. Khoa saw it, but he thought it was simply
friendship.
Uyen gives Han a bookmark as
a secret signal of her love by put it in Han’s book and don’t let Han know it.
Uyen also draws a part of heart into Han’s back.
One day, at the school yard, Khoa saw Uyen
expressing her love to Han (by throwing a green paper airplane to the balcone
where Han’s standing) and he was being taunted by a group of boys about the
sexual of his elder sister. Khoa got angry and decided to do something to
protect Uyen and her future.
Uyen didn’t know anything about
Khoa’s thought. She and Han still sink in their little happiness.
Khoa started to follow Uyen
to her tutorial class. During the class, Han – sitting behind Uyen and Khoa,
use her finger to draw a part of heart to Uyen’s back – like what she did
before. Uyen smile happily, write something to the paper she tear from her
notebook and plan to sent it to Han. But Khoa sees that and take the paper from
Uyen, throws it away and tell Uyen she should concentrate to her study, not the
other stuff. Uyen replies that the person who loss concentrate is Khoa, not her
‘cos Khoa has followed her to her class. Khoa bangs on the table and goes away,
after scouling at Han.
Han and Uyen are acrossing the
school yard. They cross a group of mean girls. Those girls glare at them,
mumble something to the others. Unexpectedly,
many water-balloons being thrown to Uyen and Han – which didn’t noticed.
Uyen screams. Han speedily holds Uyen, protect her from being wet by the popping
balloons. Han’s uniform is completly wet and show off the tank top she wore
inside.
They decided to go to Han’s
home. Han’s mother, who is a author, greets them at the back door. Han
introduce Uyen as her girlfriend. Han’s morther smiles to Uyen indulgently.
Uyen fells a bit nervous but Han’s mother cheers her up, and ask Uyen to be
normal as she was at her house. Han takes Uyen to her room. They talk a bit
about Han’s morther. Uyen is so susprise because Han’s mother’s attitude. Han
answears to her that her mother is a strange person who can’t love another man.
Uyen sees a guitar and ask Han to play a song for her. Han accepts. After
playing a song, Han realizes that Uyen had fall in sleep. Han lies down next to
her, touchs her hand and sleep.
The next morning, Uyen
returns her home and try to come in silently, but Khoa is waiting for her till
midnight. Khoa got angry and yelling at Uyen. Uyen said back that even her
parent didn’t care for her, Khoa don’t have to do that. Khoa is shocked, he
told Uyen that she is so nauty and then go away. Uyen mumbles “Sorry” to Khoa,
but he don’t look back.
At
Uyen’s gate, Uyen tries to unlock the door but she fail. Uyen is very wonder.
Khoa comes after her and told that he had changed the key. The next time, if
Uyen wanna go anywhere, she can ask Khoa and he will drive her. Uyen got angry.
She throws the key to Khoa and runs back inside the house, to her room. Uyen
slamps the door loudly.
Khoa sit in front of the
closed door, tries to talk to Uyen. He convinces Uyen that the relationship
between Uyen and Han is something not formal, asks Uyen to think about her
future. Uyen asks Khoa what to do. Khoa keeps silent. Uyen knows Khoa don’t
have the answear. She told Khoa to let everything nature, but Khoa refuse. He puts
a box in front of the room’s door and leaves.
Uyen opens the door and sees
the box. She opens and realizes that is a Leningrad
At Han’s house, Han is
playing her guitar. All around her are a dozen of green paper airplane, the
book she still read with the bookmark form Uyen.
Back to Uyen’s room. Uyen is
sitting in front of the window, in the middle of her painting and her old
watercolor box. Uyen picks up a green paper and wraps a paper airplane. The she
flies it over her window, to the sky.
An another day, Han is
walking in the school yard when a green paper airplane drops right her feet.
Han looks around to find the owner of the airplane but suddently, Uyen run to
Han and hold her from the back.
Han and Uyen escape to the
lake side behind their school. Uyen throws her green paper airplane and tells
her said story. Han tries to cheer her up, but Uyen told Han, Han is also her
wish, a wish that won’t come true. Han rolls up Uyen’s hair, wishpers to her
ear. Uyen smile happily. But unexpectly, Khoa appears. He strongly pulls Uyen’s
arm and ask Uyen why she be here. Uyen refuses Khoa’s act and yells at him.
Khoa hit Uyen. Han push Khoa off and shout out to Khoa’s face. Khoa relpied to
Han that this is the story of the normal, and Han don’t have right to attend.
Han shocks. When Khoa pulls Uyen away, Han tries to hold Uyen’s hand but she
can’t.
This night at Uyen house, Khoa
tries to take care of Uyen’s wound, but Uyen refuses. Khoa announces that their
parent are preparing for Uyen to study abroad. Uyen asked Khoa so that they can
throw Uyen away. Khoa saids ‘cos everyone want the best thing for Uyen and they
all want Uyen to forget about Han. Uyen smiles sadly and tolds Khoa she is not
a machine that can be repair everytime it went wrong. Uyen begged Khoa to
accept her relationship with Han but Khoa still refused. Uyen saids he is much to be pitied. Khoa smiles sadly and
saids he is much to be pitied ‘cos he can’t protect his sister. The Khoa
leaves. Uyen is left alone in the living room. Her eyes stops at the cutting
knife on the table.
At Han’s house. Han is lying on the sofa. Her
mother is typing nearby. Han asked her mother why she easily acept Han’s
sexual. Mom don’t answear. Han keeps continue asking what she gonna do next.
Mom stops typing and said: “Everyone all wanna protect what they love most.
What do you think bout my new book’s quotation?”. Han looks at her mom and
smiles slightly. Her phone rings. It’s Uyen on the wire. Uyen is crying. She
said that she had committed a suicide but finally fail. She gonna escape and
ask Han to join. Han is really confuse.
At Uyen’s house, Uyen is sitting in the
badroom. Inside her wrist, there are some wound which cause by the cutting
knife dropped nearby.
Night, at the bus stop. There are many bus came
and gone, but she still sitting there, holding her cell phone and cry. Unexpectedly,
from nowhere, a blue paper airplane landed right next to her. Uyen looks at the
airplane, then looks at the sky. A hundred of blue paper airplane are landing
to her. Uyen smile.
